Service year is not a gap year. Handled well, it is where a lot of Nigerians land their first real role, either at their place of primary assignment or straight after passing out. Here is how to use it.
Treat your PPA like a real job
Show up on time, take work seriously, and make yourself useful beyond what you are asked. Many organisations retain corpers who proved themselves, and even where they cannot, your PPA supervisor becomes a reference and a network. A good word from them opens doors.
Start applying before you pass out
Do not wait for your certificate. Begin applying two to three months before POP for roles that start around your completion date. Set the NYSC filter on your searches and save alerts so new graduate and entry roles reach you early.
Fix your CV for entry level
You may not have years of experience, and that is fine. Lead with your degree, your class of degree if it is strong, your NYSC role, any projects, internships, and skills. Employers hiring at this level care about attitude and potential as much as experience.
- List your NYSC PPA as work experience with real achievements, not just "served."
- Add any tool or skill you picked up: Excel, data entry, customer service, social media, coding.
- Get one or two referees ready, ideally your PPA supervisor and a lecturer.
Use the monthly allowance to invest in yourself
A cheap online course, a professional exam registration, or building a small portfolio during service year pays off far more than it costs. The corpers who leave service with a certificate plus a skill get hired fastest.
Watch for scams targeting corpers
Fresh graduates are a favourite target. No legitimate employer charges you to work. Keep the rule: never pay to get a job.
